Upon being in the house, with all the books, paintings, sculptures, and photographs I began to have a better understanding of her pain. To be able to work, to suffer through the work, to continue the work, was incredibly inspiring. I didn’t realize until I saw these casts, the pain that she was in. I also began to understand that for her, dressing in Tuhantepec/Oaxacan clothing was female empowerment. It was a coat of armour. I printed this show on aluminum dye sublimation panels in deference to the Mexican retablos which are small, colorful oil paintings, generally made on tin. Show more
