Frimaire, the month of frost (1919) The night is clear and cold, the stars cut sharp into the black, a thin silver crescent low on the horizon. Frimaire is named for the hoarfrost that settles on the grass by morning. Marthe Romme drew it as a woman standing still in the snow: a cobalt gown trimmed with white fur, her hands buried in a muff, her red hair the only warm accent in the frame. The plate comes from the series Les Douze Mois de l'Année (The Twelve Months of the Year) created in 1919, where the mood and character of each month is translated into a feminine form. In the French Republican calendar Frimaire closes the autumn cycle, just before the snow settles for good. At Art Punch you'll find it as a high-quality print on matte paper or cotton canvas in different sizes.
