A second pass is made to cover the silk-wrapped wire with a gilt metal strip, giving it a shimmering, frosted appearance. This silk-covered wire is then wrapped around a mandrel (or "needle") to form a tightly wound spring shape. The result is a sparkling, glittering silk purl that catches the light beautifully. The diameter of the purl is determined by the size of the needle used during the coiling process. The silk colors perfectly match the Pipers Silk line, as well as the silk checks and tiny silk purls, offering a cohesive look across various embroidery elements. Uses of Frosted Silk Purl #2 Frosted silk purls can be couched into place using matching silk threads, but I prefer using the TIRE silk threads for this thread. These purls can be couched to outline and fill figures, creating detailed designs. Often, the purls are cut into shorter segments, threaded onto silk, and sewn in place to form raised loops that stand proud from the fabric.
