Planting & Care 1. Planting: Avocado trees need full sunlight, so plant them in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sunlight leads to healthier trees. These trees thrive in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Sandy loam or a specialized fruit tree mix is ideal. When planting, avoid disturbing the roots. If you have heavy clay soil, create a mound with a mix of sand, compost, and fine mulch that is taller than the depth of your tree pot and about 6 feet wide.
