Sweet iron will rust when it comes into contact with (air) humidity; the surface rust tastes sweet and naturally stimulates the saliva production. This will cause the horse to salivate more which in turn encourages better acceptance of the bit. The rusting process (oxidation) changes the blue colour of the TRUST-bit to a brownish-grey. If a sweet iron bit is not used for a while, an orange-brown rust layer may develop on the mouthpiece. Simply remove this by wiping the bit with a damp cloth. The Full Cheek Gag Snaffle is a handy bit for jumpers or eventers as it not only helps to lift the head but also aids in steering. Special gag cheeks with a metal loop on the end run through the small holes in the bit ring. The reins attach to the metal loop and when pulled, the bit slides up in the horses mouth putting pressure on the lips and poll. It is recommended to use two reins, one on the bit ring and the other on the gag ring to avoid overusing the gag action of the bit.
