Ameen Foods Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis) is a lesser-known herb with a long history in traditional European herbal folklore. Native to Europe and Asia, this delicate flowering plant is recognized for its lightly bitter, earthy flavor and subtle aroma. Despite its understated reputation, fumitory has a long history of traditional use across generations. Often brewed into herbal teas or tinctures, fumitory remains a hidden gem in traditional herbalism, appreciated by herbal enthusiasts for its gentle yet distinctive properties. Culinarily, fumitory appears only occasionally, making it a rare addition to dishes. Its tender leaves can be added sparingly to salads or light sautés, introducing a mild, pleasantly bitter note that pairs well with richer foods. Though not as widely recognized as other herbs, fumitory continues to captivate those who explore its subtle flavor and time-honored place in herbal folklore. How to use itSteep a heaped teaspoon of the cut herb in a cup of freshly boiled water for ten minutes, covered, then strain. The taste is markedly bitter, so it is often blended with peppermint or taken with a little honey. Store the cut herb in an airtight jar away from light and damp. Technique tip: drop back to a five minute steep if the bitterness is too much, since the bitter compounds keep extracting for as long as the herb sits in the water. Botanical Name: Fumaria officinalisAlso known as: Earth Smoke, Beggary, Fumée de Terre, Herbe à la Veuve, Taht el-Jabal, Erdrauch.
