Fumitory tea (Fumaria officinalis), also known as earth smoke, is a traditional European herb valued for its role in supporting healthy digestive and liver function. This certified organic fumitory has a distinctly bitter flavour that reflects its traditional use as a digestive bitter. Fumitory has been used in European herbal medicine for centuries and is approved by the German Commission E for gallbladder complaints. Key Benefits Digestive support: Traditionally used in European herbal medicine to support healthy digestive function, particularly bile flow and gallbladder comfort. A classic bitter herb. Medieval writers noted that the plant seemed to rise from the ground like wisps of smoke, and some believed it was produced by vapours from the earth rather than from seed. Despite belonging to the poppy family (Papaveraceae), fumitory contains no opiates. Its alkaloids (protopine, fumarine) have a completely different pharmacological profile. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid if you have gallstones or bile duct obstruction without medical guidance. This information is not a substitute for medical advice.
