Designed as an artist book by Thomas Mailaender, ‘The Fun Archaeology’ presents a collection envisioned by this French artist. Over more than a decade he has gathered thousands of original documents, found at flea markets, charity sales, car boot sales, or on websites. It is a wide range of materials, from war letters to pornography, family photo albums to political leaflets, and anonymous work to artists’ proofs. By arranging this body of images in sequence, Mailaender creates a very personal and impressive visual archaeology of the 20th century.
