Furoshikis have been used in Japan for thousands of years (earliest records in the Nara period 710-794)- as a useful way to transport and wrap things. The name is said to come from samurais (and then later everyday people) using the furoshikis to wrap their clothes in when they disrobed for the public baths, as "Furo" means bath in Japanese.
