The Future Sound Systems Cric is a fully analogue, patchable synthesiser featuring three SSI2131-based voltage-controlled oscillators in a Recombination configuration, an SSI2164-based 18dB/octave state-mixable filter with wave-folding, and a comprehensive modulation section with four cyclical function generators, sample and hold, and dynamic voltage-controlled amplifiers throughout. Oscillators and Sound Generation Cric houses three precision analogue VCOs designed for stable pitch tracking and flexible frequency modulation, allowing for complex sound generation. Alongside these oscillators, a built-in white noise generator expands sonic possibilities, making it suitable for percussive synthesis, textural soundscapes, and layered harmonic content. Advanced Filtering and Dynamics The filter section employs an 18dB/octave state-mixable analogue voltage-controlled filter based on the Timbral Sculptor. This SSI2164-based circuit enables smooth transitions between low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filtering while incorporating a wave-folder for further harmonic manipulation. Voltage-controlled amplifiers operate across the oscillators, filter, and as an independent module, providing dynamic control over amplitude and modulation depth. Modulation Capabilities Four cyclical function generators serve as versatile modulation sources, configurable as attack-decay or attack-sustain-decay envelopes with cycle mode. These can function as low-frequency oscillators, envelope generators, or even additional audio-frequency oscillators. The sample and hold module introduces stepped modulation effects, useful for generating randomised voltages or controlled rhythmic sequences. Extensive Routing with Active Pin Matrix The 24-source by 32-destination active pin matrix enables extensive signal routing, allowing users to configure Cric as a traditional triple-VCO subtractive synthesiser, a paraphonic instrument, a drum machine, or a generative noise system. This matrix also supports signal splitting and summing, expanding its flexibility beyond conventional modular synthesisers. Comprehensive I/O and External Integration Cric features four DC-coupled inputs and outputs, allowing multi-channel audio and control voltage integration with external equipment. A dedicated microphone pre-amplifier on Input 1 facilitates direct vocal or acoustic instrument processing, while the headphone amplifier on Output 1 ensures direct monitoring without additional hardware. Build Quality and Power Requirements Encased in durable steel with Mirrl-clad HIMACS end-cheeks, Cric is built to withstand rigorous use. Weighing 5.3kg and measuring 550 x 310 x 80mm, it remains compact yet robust. Powering the unit requires a +12VDC supply with a 2.1mm centre-positive barrel jack connector, consuming 2.5A. A compatible PSU is included.
