Constellations scatter across the black upper half of this print, single white stars joined into shapes above a ridge of snow capped peaks. At the left, a wolf's head is built entirely from straight lines and flat facets, a low polygon figure that reads like a star chart in its own right. Below the ridge the design turns over completely. A full length wolf stands white on white, drawn in soft grey strokes, so the eye reads it as a shape of light rather than a block of colour. The two pillow covers take the sky end of the artwork, mountains and stars included. The wolf that already lives in the sky Lupus, the Wolf, is a genuine southern constellation and one of the 48 that Ptolemy listed in the second century. It sits between Scorpius and Centaurus, and the old star atlases drew it as a wild animal carried by the Centaur rather than as a hunter of its own.
