In capturing this photo, I left Miami in the very early hours of the morning and ventured deep into the Everglades in total darkness. The trek through the Everglades this time of the day can feel intimidating—miles of desolate wilderness where unseen creatures lurk in the swamps. Gators, crocs, snakes, birds, and countless other hidden inhabitants make their presence felt without ever being seen. In spite of this, having photographed this place so many times, I’ve come to find a certain solace in the solitude and tranquility, anticipating what the rising sun will reveal.This image, taken about 30 minutes before sunrise, captures a magical moment gifted by nature. The soft purple hues of the early morning light and the gentle mist rising from the lake create an otherworldly scene. And then there’s the alligator—calmly resting at the water's edge, a silent yet essential part of this Everglades scene. The wonderful elements of nature in this photo create a quintessential Everglades scene.For me, this photo embodies the wonder and untamed beauty of the Everglades.
