Gaviscon Double Action tablets have been specifically formulated for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux. These symptoms include acid regurgitation, heartburn and indigestion which may occur following meals or during pregnancy, and in those who display symptoms of oesophagitis. Gaviscon Double Action tablets contain the active ingredients sodium alginate 250mg, sodium bicarbonate 106.5mg and calcium carbonate 187.5mg. They work in two ways to effectively relieve the symptoms of both heartburn and indigestion. Firstly, sodium alginate begins to form a thick layer (known as a raft) on top of the stomach contents once it makes contact with the stomach acid. The raft acts as a strong physical barrier and helps to keep stomach contents in the stomach where they belong and not in the food pipe where they hurt.
