The neighborhood’s name is actually a "telephone game" error. It was originally called Gehrke’s Town after Alfred Gehrke, who owned a general store at the corner of Carrollton and Colapissa in the late 1800s. Because his store had the only telephone in the area, it became the local hub. Over time, "Gehrke" was lazily shortened and corrupted into "Gert."Gert Town was home to Lincoln Park and Johnson Park, two legendary spots for early Jazz. This is where "cutting contests" became famous—musical duels where bands would play against each other to see who could win over the crowd. Product: Gildan G200 Adult Ultra Cotton 6 oz.
