Additional Details: Original exhibition poster for Howard Hodgkin: Paintings 1975–1995, a major traveling retrospective presented at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; and Kunstverein Düsseldorf in 1995–1996. The poster is hand-signed and dated “1995” by Hodgkin in black ink. The design reproduces Hodgkin’s Sad Flowers (1995), an expressive composition of sweeping, gestural brushwork. Saturated passages of red, orange and yellow emerge from a surrounding field of deep blue and green, suggesting a loosely defined bouquet without resolving into conventional floral forms. Hodgkin’s painted border becomes part of the composition, intensifying the work’s sense of depth and framing the image within the image.
