Max Ernst, a pivotal figure in the Dada and Surrealist movements, created Ursachen in 1927. The work reflects Ernst’s fascination with the unconscious mind and his experimental techniques such as frottage and grattage. Ursachen embodies a dreamlike, ambiguous landscape filled with biomorphic forms and symbolic imagery, evoking the hidden forces that shape perception and experience. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is a major institution for modern and contemporary art, presenting both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Artists represented include Ernst, Picasso, Kandinsky, and other key figures in 20th-century European art. The museum’s innovative displays and installations offer a compelling context for appreciating the avant-garde legacy of artists like Ernst.
