One of our favorite small businesses in Brooklyn is Brandnewnoise, a growing operation helmed by jack-of-all-trades Richard Upchurch. The woodworker, engineer, and designer built his brand around an arsenal of sound toys and instruments, all of which are handmade by Upchurch and his crew out in Red Hook. Inspired by his DIY spirit, we reached out to collaborate with Brandnewnoise, and thus the Ghostly Zoots was born. This remarkable instrument is based around a kalimba (or African thumb piano), but tweaked and modified to Upchurch's high creative standards. Its looping and pitch-shift capabilities are especially fun to play with. And seeing as how the dark ebony stain and Ghostly logo are all new touches, this is a piece that truly can't be found anywhere else.
