Roy Purcell's portrayal of large fallen trees layered over one another amid two trees still standing features a poem by the artist about the death and rebirth of trees in this habi tat. Knotty and twisted, the leafless tree in the foreground of the composition leans backward as if it is about to fall this very minute, while the tree behind it retains its leaves and stands tall regardless of the snowfall.
