Burnet became Professor of Divinity at Glasgow University in 1669, but resigned in 1674 and moved to London after a disagreement with his patron, the Duke of Lauderdale. In 1685, he fled to France, and then Holland, on being accused of plotting against James II. When William of Orange became king, he appointed Burnet as his royal chaplain.
