Our LARP foam model of the Gladius can be ordered with a 50cm Gladius foam blade or the longer "Spatha" version with a 70cm Doge blade. It has a metal rivet in brass colour on the pommel. A Roman scabbard can only be ordered for the Gladius blade. The Roman Legions were renowned for their brutal, efficient use of the short sword - gladius. The Pompeii pattern was the first major change in the Roman short sword, showing that battle tactics had firmly changed to emphasize the thrust rather than the cut in combat. Though the Pompeii gladius is a smaller cousin of its predecessors, it is still an surprisingly efficient cutting sword, despite its seemingly plain blade. Although the Romans are known to have favored the point in close quarter fighting, they never abstained from the efficient use of cuts when the opportunity arose. With the Pompeii type, the point has evolved into a shorter and sturdier profile. The scabbard is traditionally worn on the right hip with the strap over the shoulder. This is the opposite of most later swords. To measure the strap length, take a measuring tape for sewing (flexible ribbon), put it over your shoulder and connect it on the opposite side of your torso. You should connect it on the level where you want the scabbard to sit. This is typically your natural waist. Take into account any armor you'd like to wear underneath.
