This truth still finds me, unexpectedly, and it saddens me every time: if only I had looked instead of glanced, maybe I could have kept them. Made a small museum of them inside myself — the light on the water that one Tuesday, the sound of her laughter ringing out, the ordinary gold of an ordinary hour I let pass like it would come again. I was fortunate enough to catch it. It was one of those evenings when the sun sits just low enough and spreads its rays wide, inviting us to look up — that in-between place where heaven meets earth. And as I watched, the rays blurred until they read as if only one line– a single beam stretching across the water. It was a strikingly brilliant line, like pure glitter. It was sacred to me.
