Gold plating will gradually wear and start to show the sterling silver layer beneath. The gold plated layer typically lasts up to 1 year with gentle, occasional wear, and if you follow the care instructions. The places where it most comes into contact with your skin will be the first to fade as the oils in our skin wear down the gold. Please contact me to arrange re-plating. This service typically takes 2 weeks. Items are "Hard Gold Plated" - this is a thicker layer than what is typical for plated jewellery. Gold Plating = Around 1 micron thickness Gold Vermeil = Approx 2 microns thickness Hard Gold Plating = Approx 3 microns thickness Plated jewellery can be a good option if worn occasionally and minded (see tips below), however if you wish to wear everyday and have the piece forever, then solid gold or sterling silver are best options. Please note: This service is only available for pieces of Andrea Mears Jewellery, and not other jewellery. Here are some helpful tips to prolong the life of your gold plated jewellery: - Do not wear your jewellery in the sea, the shower, sauna or the pool as this will tarnish and damage the plating. - Keep it dry, store in the box it came it, and avoid leaving it in the bathroom or other high moisture areas. - Apply any perfume, body lotion or creams and let them dry before you put on your jewellery. - Put your jewellery on last and take it off first. - Sleeping in jewellery especially gold plated jewellery will shorten its life. It puts chains under pressure causing them to wear and stretch , so take necklaces off at night and store in their box. - After wearing, wipe your jewellery clean with a dry soft cotton cloth to remove any moisture, skin oils etc.
