Golden Currant (Ribes aureum) is a versatile deciduous shrub native to most of the United States and into Canada. In spring, it produces clusters of fragrant yellow flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. These blooms give way to edible berries that range in color from yellow to red or purple when ripe, offering a sweet-tart flavor enjoyed by wildlife. The shrub's light green leaves provide a lush backdrop during the growing season and transition to a maroon hue in the fall, adding seasonal interest to landscapes. Golden Currant adapts well to different soil types and light conditions, flourishing in full sun to moderate shade. While Golden Currant needs at least a half day of full sun, it tends to do best with a bit of afternoon shade.
