Gorillaz is the eponymous debut studio album by virtual band Gorillaz. It was released on March 26, 2001 in the United Kingdom by Parlophone and in the United States by Virgin Records. The brainchild of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz emerged from London as a virtual band composed of four animated characters: 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel. This playful, surreal concept allowed Albarn to break free of Britpop conventions and explore a wide array of sounds, from hip-hop to dub, reggae, and electronic music.
