Göteborg Shoreline — Limited Edition Print Göteborg's importance as a port city cannot be overstated. Sweden's gateway to the West, its shoreline sustained substantial employment — shipbuilding alone employed 15,000 at its peak in the post-WWII era across the major yards of Götaverken, Eriksberg and Lindholmen. The shoreline was also a space of departure: during Sweden's great migration of the 19th and early 20th centuries, an estimated 1 million Swedes waved goodbye from Göteborg's shore on their way to the United States. Rather than being dominated by the familiar manmade structures of the skyline, this design is populated by Trana — Cranes — which breed in Sweden before migrating each winter across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Their spring return to lakes such as Hornborgasjön, where 30,000 descend in what locals call the Tranadansa, is a vision of unparalleled natural beauty. They were there first.
