Bouteloua curtipendula Also known as Sideoats Grama, Banderilla, Banderita, Navajita Sideoats Grama is recognized for its unique oat-like seed spikes, which dangle gracefully from one side of its flowering stems. You can usually find it flourishing in meadows, prairies, open rocky woodlands, and even along railroad tracks throughout much of the state. The narrow, bluish-gray leaf blades, about 1/4" wide, create a lovely, dense clump that grows to heights of 1 to 1.5 feet. As autumn rolls in, the foliage transforms into shades of golden brown, occasionally showcasing hints of orange and red. During early to mid-summer, inflorescences with purplish-tinged flowers rise above the leaves, often elevating the total height of the clump to 3 feet. As the seeds mature, these inflorescences gradually fade to tan, adding to the landscape's charm.
