Eldorado Feather Reed is an ornamental grass known for its striking appearance. It features narrow, upright blades with a golden-yellow coloration that intensifies as the plant matures. The feathery plumes that rise above the foliage are initially pinkish, transitioning to a soft, wheat-like color as they age, providing visual interest throughout the growing season. Size: Eldorado Feather Reed grass typically reaches a mature height of about 3 to 5 feet and spreads to about 2 to 3 feet in width. Location: Plant Eldorado Feather Reed in a location that receives full sun to light shade. It performs best in areas with well-draining soil. Soil: This grass is adaptable to a range of soil types but prefers moist, fertile soil. Amending the soil with compost before planting can help improve its overall growth. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase. Once the grass is established, it becomes more tolerant of occasional dry periods. However, it will still benefit from regular watering, especially during hot and dry periods. Fertilization: Eldorado Feather Reed grass doesn't require heavy fertilization. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring can provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth. Pruning: In late winter or early spring, before new growth emerges, cut back the previous year's foliage and spent flower heads to a few inches above the ground. This helps promote new growth and maintains a tidy appearance. Dividing: Over time, the grass can become dense, affecting its overall health and appearance. Dividing the grass every 2 to 3 years in early spring can rejuvenate the plant. Dig up the clump and divide it into smaller sections, then replant the divisions. Pest and Disease: Eldorado Feather Reed grass is generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, keeping the area around the plant clean and providing proper air circulation can help prevent potential issues. Winter Care: This grass is considered hardy and can tolerate colder temperatures. Leaving the dried foliage and plumes in place during the winter can provide some protection to the crown of the plant. You can cut back the old growth in early spring before new growth begins.
