Robert Hunter's arrival as the band's primary lyricist gave the Dead something they'd been reaching for since the Haight-Ashbury days, a true poet in the room. Songs like "St. Stephen" and "China Cat Sunflower" that debuted here became cornerstones of the live canon, played thousands of times over the next two decades and still burning bright in setlists today. “In 1969, for their third album, the Grateful Dead eschewed outside producers and created Aoxomoxoa themselves, beginning a run of self-produced albums that would continue until 1977.
