Gratitude is the latest release from world renowned guitarist and composer Steve Mullins with his ensemble Rim of the Well. A master of flamenco styles, Mullins weaves together inf luences from Spain, the Balkans, Africa, and the Americas to create music that feels both ancient and vividly modern. The album moves from the haunting “Insurrection Tangos,” written on January 6, 2021 as history unfolded live on television, to the luminous title track “Gratitude,” a guajiras infused with Balkan color. “Possibility of Orchids” explores the mystery of inspiration, while “Ruben and the Rain” remembers a beloved friend against the backdrop of Colorado’s spring storms. Traditional works like Barrios’ Las Abejas and the Mexican waltz La Llarona are reimagined through a flamenco lens, sitting alongside intimate originals such as “Lullaby for Quinn Rose,” written for Mullins’ granddaughter.
