Gratitude – 36x36 – Oil on Linen In Gratitude, a solitary grizzly bear moves through a luminous landscape suspended between reality and imagination. Bathed in warm reflected light and surrounded by an atmosphere of mystery and stillness, the bear becomes more than a wildlife subject—it becomes a symbol of presence. The painting was created during a period when I was exploring the emotional power of light and atmosphere in my work. Rather than depicting a specific place, I wanted to create a feeling: a quiet moment of awareness where time slows and the natural world reveals its deeper beauty. Having spent much of my life living and working in wilderness areas, I have always been inspired by the way wild animals inhabit the present moment. They are not distracted by the past or concerned about the future. That sense of complete presence inspired both the painting and its title. Rich brushwork, layered textures, and luminous passages of color create a balance between realism and imagination. The glowing form behind the bear acts almost like a moon, a memory, or a source of inner light, inviting the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the scene. Gratitude is one of my most atmospheric bear paintings, combining strong design, expressive brushwork, and a contemplative mood that reflects my ongoing fascination with the wild North. Original oil painting on linen. 36 x 36 inches. Framed in a custom gold-leaf frame. Available through the artist.
