Cormorants are fabulous water birds. Their dense inner feathers insulate, while their looser outer feathers allow them to maneuver as if they had fins--but do require drying in the sun. Their wings are so graphic; cormorants really do have black outlines around each feather. This offered me the opportunity to create a graphite study with gradients of blacks, browns, and blue, transforming what some might consider a dull subject into a thrilling artistic exercise.
