My friend Lawna is often mistaken for a grassy hill, but she has always had a really good sense of humor about it (ask her sometime about her “dandelion phase”, it might be my favorite story of hers; either that or the weed whacker one). We were sitting together in the park once a few years back, and a couple walked right up and spread a picnic blanket across her forehead. They were mortified, of course, and rightfully so in my opinion, but Lawna assuaged their embarrassment with a cheerful “Gnoll is my brother, don’t worry, we get mixed up all the time”, we all had a good laugh, and now they’ve become two of her closest friends. The couple owns a restaurant in town, and Lawna grows all their herbs; when I popped in to say hi the other day, her mighty mane was a tangle of rosemary and marjoram, she had basils in her brows and chives in her tresses, she was wrapped all over in a blanket of blooming nasturtiums. Lawna grew these earrings herself! Unsure of the cultivar, but really nice work as usual.
