Latin name - Pouteria viridis Green Sapote is a rare relative of Mamey Sapote, producing a fruit which is very similar, but smaller, with a thinner, greenish skin. It is also a sma ller tree with a more compact growth habit. The fruit matures and ripens much faster than a Mamey, with Green Sapote taking only 9-10 months compared to almost 2 years for Mamey. One other advantage is that it’s a few degrees more cold hardy, giving it potential for growers in Central Florida. Because it’s not commercially produced, Green Sapote trees are hard to find and there aren’t many known cultivars available. We very seldom have grafted Green Sapote trees available, but have some hope that this fruit will become more commonly grown in the coming years. They seem to be just as productive as Mamey but perhaps better suited for small yards and growers north of zone 10. _____________________________________________________________________ Size: 15-20 ft.
