Portable explosives like this grenade stretch back centuries, even predating gunpowder thanks to the ‘Greek fire’ used by Roman soldiers. The grenade on this pin badge resembles th e Mills Bomb, which was the first modern fragmentation grenade. It was widely used by the British Army throughout the First and Second World Wars.
