Grind Espresso Shot Liqueur 750ML is a rum-based coffee liqueur bottled at 30% ABV (60 proof) that blends medium-roasted Colombian Arabica espresso with Caribbean rum. This Connecticut-produced spirit earned a Bronze Medal at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and its rum-forward base sets it apart from the majority of coffee liqueurs on the market.Quick Facts: ABV: 30% (60 proof) | Origin: Norwalk, Connecticut, United States | Style: Espresso Coffee Liqueur | Distillery: Grind Distilling CompanyProduction & HeritageGrind Distilling Company, based in Norwalk, Connecticut, takes a distinctly different approach to coffee liqueur production. Where most competitors in the category rely on a neutral vodka base to let coffee flavors take center stage, Grind builds its foundation on Caribbean rum — a choice that introduces layers of molasses-rich warmth and subtle tropical spice to the finished spirit. The process begins with medium-roasted Colombian Arabica coffee beans, which are carefully infused into the rum base through a controlled extraction, preserving the intensity of fresh espresso without introducing bitterness.Tasting NotesAroma: Deep, inviting roasted coffee dominates the nose, followed by hints of brown sugar sweetness and a faint undertone of warm molasses. The overall impression is of a freshly pulled espresso shot still radiating heat.Taste: The entry is smooth and full-bodied, with bold espresso flavors leading immediately into the mid-palate. Dark chocolate and toffee emerge as the rum base begins to assert itself, adding warmth and a gentle spiciness. Cocoa notes weave through the finish of the palate, balanced by the natural sweetness of the rum.Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering roasted coffee and dark chocolate trailing into a warm, rum-driven close. The texture remains velvety throughout, never turning syrupy or cloying. How to Drink Grind Espresso ShotServed neat or slightly chilled, this liqueur delivers its espresso and rum character most clearly — a small pour in an espresso cup mimics the experience of a corrected coffee. It also performs exceptionally well in cocktails: Espresso Martini: The rum base adds depth and warmth that a vodka-based coffee liqueur simply cannot, giving the classic cocktail a fuller body. Black Russian: Substituting Grind for a standard coffee liqueur introduces a richer, more complex sweetness against the vodka. Rum Old Fashioned (Coffee variation): Grind's natural affinity with aged rum makes it a seamless modifier — a half-ounce alongside dark rum, bitters, and an orange peel creates a compelling after-dinner drink. It delivers bold, freshly brewed espresso flavor layered with dark chocolate, toffee, and cocoa, all carried by a smooth Caribbean rum warmth that distinguishes it from lighter, vodka-based coffee liqueurs. How does Grind Espresso Shot compare to Kahlúa? The most significant difference is the base spirit: Grind uses Caribbean rum exclusively and is bottled at 30% ABV, while Kahlúa is bottled at 20% ABV. The result is a noticeably bolder, less sweet profile with more pronounced rum character and a higher proof that stands up better in spirit-forward cocktails. Is Grind Espresso Shot good for cocktails? Its 30% ABV and full-bodied espresso flavor make it an excellent cocktail ingredient, particularly in Espresso Martinis, Black Russians, and rum-based coffee drinks where a richer, less sweet coffee liqueur is desirable.Where is Grind Espresso Shot made? It is produced by Grind Distilling Company in Norwalk, Connecticut, using medium-roasted Colombian Arabica coffee beans and Caribbean rum. What foods pair well with Grind Espresso Shot? Tiramisu complements the espresso and rum overlap directly. Dark chocolate truffles echo the cocoa and toffee notes. Vanilla bean ice cream provides a contrasting creaminess that highlights the roasted coffee. Crème brûlée matches the caramelized sweetness, and aged hard cheeses like Gouda offer a savory counterpoint to the liqueur's richness. What sizes does Grind Espresso Shot come in? The standard offering is the 750ml bottle. Is Grind Espresso Shot worth the price? Grind positions as a mid-range coffee liqueur that punches above its price point due to the Caribbean rum base and higher 30% ABV, offering more complexity and cocktail versatility than many competitors in the same tier. Why Grind Espresso Shot? The decision to build a coffee liqueur on Caribbean rum rather than neutral vodka is the single most important thing separating Grind from the crowded field. That rum base introduces genuine depth — molasses warmth, subtle spice, tropical sweetness — that complements rather than merely carries the espresso. At 30% ABV, it holds its own in cocktails without being diluted into the background, a common issue with lower-proof competitors. For anyone who finds mainstream coffee liqueurs too sweet or one-dimensional, this Connecticut-produced expression offers a legitimate alternative with real character.
