Entering service in 1942; the aircraft was used to attack surface targets; especially enemy ships. Its three-person crew consisted of a pilot; gunner and operator. The TBF Avenger was armed with a machine gun and could carry torpedoes; bombs and rockets. Its participation in the Battle of Midway in 1942 was crucial to the success of American naval aviation. After the end of World War II; the TBF Avenger was gradually replaced by newer designs but remained in use until the 1960s.
