This piece is about the maps we used to make as kids. We’d draw them by hand and make them look old by dipping the paper in tea, burning the edges so they felt like something important. Pirate maps. Treasure maps. We’d follow them around the backyard finding petals and bugs. Our place backed onto a creek that was full of tadpoles, flowers and some acreage. The maps became a way of moving through that space too, climbing eucalyptus trees, crossing the hill, heading down to the water. They weren’t accurate, but they didn’t need to be. They just gave shape to our wandering. This painting reflects those handmade maps. The layered washes, worn edges and loose markings reference paper that’s been handled, folded and carried around. It’s about imagination meeting place. Turning familiar ground into something larger, simply by playing and making it feel like an adventure. Each original artwork is one-of-a-kind and created in my Melbourne studio. The piece will be carefully packaged in a custom double-walled box to ensure safe delivery.
