It puts on its best growth in moist, well-drained fertile soils, but is very tolerant of every other growing condition (drought, wet soils, salts, clay, sand, wind, heat, pollution, etc.). Hackberry is easily discernible in the landscape by its warty/corky grey bark and toothed, oval medium green leaves. Fleshy purple fruits eventually mature on the tree and are actually edible; often persisting into winter as well and make great food for birds. Very long lived tree.
