How to set up a half barrel planter Drill 3 holes in the base of the barrel, 1 3/16 inch (30 mm) each. Fix the metal hoops to the wood staves with the hoop screws, 4 per hoop. Place the liner in the barrel and roll the edge over the side. Set the perforation at the soil level you want. Push the drain tubes through the liner into the drilled holes.
