According to ancient Jewish folk beliefs, the HAMSA is the protective hand of G-d which wards off the Evil Eye. Symbols often incorporated into the HAMSA are the blue eye of G-d (b lue being the color of the protective sky above us), fish, (immune to the Evil Eye because they are covered in water, and water is equated with life), and doves, symbols of peace. On this HAMSA, a pewter dove hovers above the brass protective hand. "Shalom", the Hebrew word for peace, is handcut from the brass at the top.
