Unique and beautiful flat wooden spurtles are carved by hand from native tree species by a local Michigan forester. Each is one-of-a-kind and varies in color, shape, and size. Wood Species Used: Red Oak, Red Cedar, Hickory, Black Cherry, White Ash, Beech, Black Walnut To maintain, occasionally rub with food grade mineral, olive, or vegetable oil, applying 2-3 coats. Hand wash only. Spurtles were developed in the Scottish Highlands and have been used for centuries to stir porridge. With less surface area for things like oatmeal other grains to stick to; it helps the porridge achieve a creamy consistency, preventing lumps. The flatness of this kind of spurtle lends itself to used for flipping things like oatcakes, pancakes, or omelets; as well as scrambling eggs, stirring soups and stews, mixing heavy batters, or stirring sourdough starter!
