The Hans Heysen catalogue was written by Rebecca Andrews to accompany a major retrospective of the artists' work in 2008/-09 held at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Hans Heysen (1877-1968) is renowned as one of Australia’s greatest artists. The exhibition, which toured nationally in 2009 and 2010, featured more than 100 works created over the artist’s seventy-year career and marked the 40th anniversary of his death. In addition to his well-known landscapes that celebrate the monumentality of the Australian gum tree, the book reappraises his lesser-known work, tracing its development from his early student days painting in Europe between 1899 and 1903.
