This pitcher is called Harcrest Oven Proof Stoneware and also known as Marcrest Oven Proof Stoneware. The Western Stoneware Co. in Monmouth ILL. produced the pitcher. The design on this stoneware is refer to as “Colorado Brown Daisy” or “Dot Pattern.” The stoneware was used as a promotions item by service stations, grocery stores, and movie theaters and the item size and value would depending on how much money was spent by the customer. The ideal was to bring new customers into the establishing in hope to make them spend more money depending on what item the customers would want. A lot of these promotions item could not be bought off the store shelf. This type of promotion was started in the 1930s around the depress time and lasted until the late 1960s. This design was introduced in the 1950’s. This type of pitcher would be used at the dining room table for water, milk, etc. at all meals.
