Spend a day learning the art of hardbound book binding with guest maker Ruth McCann. In this 8 hour session you will first learn about bookbinding tools and materials then Ruth will guide you through the process step by step and teach you how to create your very own beautifully hand bound A5 notebook or sketch pad. In the morning you will fold and tear paper to size, then hand sew the sections together before end papers and spine lining are added to the book block. After lunch you will make your book covers, choosing from a selection of different coloured book clothes and patterned papers to cover the grey board. The final stage is casing in the book where the cover is attached to the book block. Starts at 10am and will last approximately 8 hours including breaks. Light refreshments included and there will be time to pop out for lunch. Up to 10 spaces available. Ruth has a Masters in Fine Art and has been a bookbinder for 25 years. She worked in Hubert’s Hand Bindery in Cork Ireland for 3 years and then in Book Works in London for 7 years. Ruth currently teaches classes at Northern Print, Newcastle Art Centre and ArtisOn as well as working full time in a SEND school in the Art department.
