The Hardy series is a range of chairs and tables inspired by Thomas Hardy's poem Old Furniture, an ode to the beauty of furni ture being handed down the generations. “At the start of the poem Hardy reminisces about old family furniture passed down through generations and I drew parallels here with my own work.” Irwin explains. Two chair typologies from the 19th century, Thomas Hardy's birth century, inspired its design: firstly the Captain's chair originally a low-backed wooden armchair and secondly, the Smokers bow, a low back Windsor, often used in smoking rooms, public houses, barbers shops and cottages.
