A wonderfully timeworn antique French travel hat box, constructed in canvas with leather trim, brass hardware and its original leather carrying handle and securing strap. The tapered shape was designed to protect a hat during travel, with the wider upper section allowing room for the crown and brim while keeping the piece compact enough for transport. Boxes like this became particularly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when structured hats were an essential part of dress and travelers relied on purpose-built luggage to carry them safely by rail, carriage and early automobile. This example retains beautiful original details, including the brass corner plates and lock, leather edging, riveted construction and pale fabric-lined interior. The exterior has developed a rich warm patina from years of handling and travel, with softened leather, surface marks and wear that give it tremendous character. A sculptural piece of antique luggage that would be beautiful stacked with trunks, displayed on shelving, or used as decorative storage.
