The Hatch Iconic Fly Reel is everything we have come to expect from one of our favorite reel manufacturers. The reel has a bold look with a more rounded overall shape than its predecessor, the Finatic Gen 2 reel. The changes are not just cosmetic. There are a couple notable improvements as well.The first is porting at the base of the spool. All Hatch reels have a sealed drag, and we anglers have a habit of dunking sealed reels underwater. In a saltwater environment this can result in saltwater soaking into the backing and sitting against the inside of the spool. Porting allows freshwater rinse water to reach the salty backing and the wet backing to thoroughly dry out afterwards, limiting the possibility of corrosion.The second major improvement is a much easier, more elegant method of changing retrieve direction. Remove the spool and simply unscrew the drag cover with the included tool. Then flip the one-way roller bearing over and screw the cover back on. Threading is fine and very precise and the two well lubricated O-rings seal the inside of the drag against the elements.Every Hatch reel is made of solid 6061 T6 aluminum and finished with Type II anodizing.
