A scaled-down version of our adult's thumbsticks, the thumbstick is an unusual stick that is much sought afte r in the countryside. Produced using the coppicing method, these sticks are formed from the shoot that grows when the upper part of a young tree (usually ash or hazel) is removed. Occasionally, these shoots fork to produce the distinctive thumbstick shape; the stick should be grasped around the neck, with the user's thumb resting in the 'V' formed by the shoots.
