Plug both ends of a standard HDMI or Mini HDMI cable into the tester and it checks every connection for opens, shorts, and pairs wired in the wrong order, in your choice of two views: Scan mode steps through the connections one at a time so you can watch each one pass or fail, and Full Display mode shows the state of the whole cable at once. The remote half detaches from the main unit, so a cable that's already pulled through a wall or a ceiling, or one that's too long to bring both ends to the bench, tests just as easily as a patch lead, and it's been tested on cables up to 500 m. Good to Know This is a wiring tester, not a bandwidth tester. A pass means every connection is intact and in the right place, which rules out the broken conductor or the crushed cable that causes most faults; it doesn't certify that the cable will carry 4K at 60 Hz or any other data rate, so a long cable that passes here and still drops out at high resolution is a bandwidth problem, not a wiring one. It's made for passive copper cables: active HDMI cables with electronics in the plug and fiber-optic HDMI cables don't carry every connection as plain copper from end to end, so they won't map normally on a continuity tester. Micro HDMI (Type D) cables need an adapter, which isn't included, and anything in the signal path during the test, including an adapter, is part of what's being tested. Test the cable with nothing else connected to it, use Scan mode when you want to see which connection is failing and Full Display when you just want a pass or fail, and if a cable tests good on the bench but fails installed, test it again in place with the detached remote; a cable can be damaged during the pull. It runs on one 9 V battery, included, and the auto-shutdown means a tester that's gone dark has most likely timed out rather than died.
