Through a process as ancient as civilization, heat tempering has been used for millennia to harden steal , physically transforming the metal through the precise control of heat and fire. As the molecules within the metal realign under ever increasing heat, specific wavelengths of light are either intensified or attenuated within a vanishingly thin iron oxide layer at the surface of the material. The result is an exceptionally specific spectrum of color - from a pale bronze to deep purple to a grey blue - simultaneously mercurial and predictable, akin to the fleeting colors of soap bubbles and oil films.
